Suppose I were to have 12 fans on a case, and I'd like them to be controlled by groups of three. Using a Fan Controller such as Corsair's commander Pro or NZXT's Grid V3 would allow for only 6 of them to be controlled, and it really isn't necessary to have such granular control over all of them, and neither does it seem to be efficient to control all of them at once, so controlling 3 of them at a time seems like a nice middle ground.
